In late May, two EFNEP Educators were a part of a team of NC State Extension Master Gardener volunteers, youth from area 4-H clubs, and Extension staff from Pender and New Hanover counties that spent the morning gleaning blueberries from the fields at the NC State Horticultural Crops Research Station in Castle Hayne. This research station is one of the premier research facilities for the production of blueberries. Following the initial harvest and crop assessments, the remaining blueberries used to go to waste in the field. Because of Extension’s work, the remaining blueberries are picked and donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC.
